Worked example 1: a room

A bedroom that measures 10 feet by 10 feet is 100 square feet. Convert it:

So a 10 by 10 room is about 9.3 square meters. It's a handy anchor to memorize, because a lot of North American rooms land near 100 sq ft and you can scale the metric size from there.

Commercial real estate is often quoted in hundreds of thousands or millions of square feet: distribution warehouses, office towers, shopping centers, and campus totals. At that scale it helps to see hectares and acres alongside square meters.

A million square feet is 92,903 square meters, a little over 9 hectares. That's the scale of a large fulfilment center. Floor area figures that big are usually gross building area or gross leasable area rather than living area, and commercial square footage explains how those differ. Keep the full 0.09290304 factor at this size: rounding to 0.0929 drops about 3 square meters per million square feet, which is trivial, but rounding to 0.093 adds nearly 100.

Feet to meters conversion chart (for measuring dimensions)

If you measured a room in feet and want its metric dimensions rather than just its area, convert each side as a length first. If you already have the dimensions in meters or centimeters, the square meter calculator multiplies them for you. The length factor is different: one foot is 0.3048 meters.

A 12 by 15 foot room is 3.66 by 4.57 meters, and 3.66 x 4.57 = 16.7 m2. Converting the area directly, 180 sq ft x 0.092903, gives the same 16.7 m2. Either route works, as long as lengths use 0.3048 and areas use 0.092903.

One thing that can't be done is converting square feet to meters. Square feet measure area and meters measure length, so there's no single answer. What you can do is work out the side of a square with that area: 1,000 sq ft is a square about 31.6 feet on a side, which is 9.64 meters.

The CONVERT function. Excel's CONVERT function takes the value and two unit codes, and Microsoft's documentation lists square feet as "ft2" or "ft^2" and square meters as "m2" or "m^2". Google Sheets has the same function, and its area units include "ft^2" and "m^2". The caret form works in both, so it's the safer one to use:

To round to two decimal places, wrap it: =ROUND(CONVERT(A2,"ft^2","m^2"),2). Fill the formula down the column and every row converts. To go the other way, swap the two unit codes.

The CONVERT codes are case sensitive, and a typo returns an #N/A error rather than a wrong number, which is a useful safety net. The multiplication version will quietly give a wrong answer if you type the factor wrong, so it's worth checking one row against the table above.

Most single rooms fall between 9 and 30 square meters, so if a metric floor plan lists a bedroom as 11 m2 you already know it's a touch bigger than a standard 10 by 10.

Why this conversion matters internationally

Most of the world measures floor area in square meters. The United States, and to a lesser extent the UK and Canada in everyday real estate talk, still lean on square feet. So the moment you look at property abroad, fill in a relocation or visa form, read an architectural drawing from a metric firm, or compare a US listing against one in Europe or Asia, you're bridging the two systems.

A few practical spots where it bites. Industrial leases are often quoted per square meter in one country and per square foot in another, and the per unit rate looks wildly different until you convert. How listing sizes are measured differently in the US and metric countries

Converting the number is the easy part. The trap is that "floor area" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere, and the raw conversion hides it.

In the US, residential square footage generally follows the ANSI Z765 standard: finished, above grade living space, measured to the outside faces of the exterior walls, so the thickness of the walls is counted. Fannie Mae requires the standard for appraisals, which means a US figure is usually gross living area, walls included. Many metric countries advertise a net or usable figure instead. In France, the loi Carrez requires the private floor area of most apartments to be stated, and it leaves out walls, stairs, and any space with a ceiling under 1.80 meters. In India, listings distinguish carpet area (the floor you can walk on), built up area (carpet plus walls), and super built up area (which loads in a share of hallways and common space), and the same flat can look 20 to 30 percent bigger under the super built up figure.

So a US home of 1,000 square feet converts to 92.9 m2, but a Paris apartment advertised at 93 m2 under Carrez rules is probably somewhat larger in gross terms. Convert the units first, then ask which standard produced each one.

Common mistakes

Using 10.764 instead of 0.0929. They're inverses, so swapping them throws the answer off by a factor of more than 100. Square meters are bigger than square feet, so the same space is always a smaller number in square meters. If your metric figure came out larger, you multiplied by the wrong factor.

Converting area with the length factor. 0.3048 is for feet to meters as a length. Using it on square feet gives an answer more than three times too big. Areas need 0.092903.

Asking for "square feet to meters." Area and length are different kinds of measurement and don't convert into each other. You want square meters.

Rounding too early on big numbers. On a house it barely matters. On a commercial figure in the hundreds of thousands, use 0.09290304 and round at the end.
