How to convert square feet to square meters
Multiply square feet by 0.09290304. That factor is exact: NIST defines the foot as exactly 0.3048 meters and the square foot as exactly 0.09290304 square meters.
Square meters = square feet × 0.09290304
- Take the area in square feet. A 2,000 square foot house, for example. If you only have the sides, multiply them first; how to calculate square footage shows how. For several rooms, the square footage calculator gives the total square footage in square meters too.
- Multiply by 0.09290304. 2,000 × 0.09290304 = 185.81 m².
- Round at the end, to two decimals for a room or a house.
Mental check: divide by 10, then take off 7 percent. 1,500 sq ft becomes 150, minus 10.5, so about 139.5 m² against an exact 139.35.

Square feet to meters: area vs length
Square feet can't be converted to meters, because one is an area and the other a length. A search for "3,000 square feet to meters" almost always means square meters: 278.71 m².
To get a room's metric dimensions, convert each side with 0.3048, then multiply. Either route gives the same area.

In Excel and Google Sheets
With square feet in cell A2, either formula works in both programs:
=CONVERT(A2,"ft^2","m^2")
Or multiply directly with =A2*0.09290304, and wrap either formula in ROUND(...,2) for two decimals.
Excel accepts "ft2" and "m2" as well, but Google Sheets lists only "ft^2" and "m^2".
In Excel the codes are case sensitive, and a wrong code returns #N/A instead of a wrong number.
Common mistakes
That's the reverse factor. The m² figure is always the smaller number; if yours came out bigger, divide instead.
0.3048 is for lengths. On square feet it gives an answer more than three times too big.
