Pool Table Room Size
An 8 foot pool table needs a room at least 13 feet 4 inches wide and 17 feet long with a standard 58 inch cue. Every pool table room size works the same way: the playing surface plus one full cue length off every cushion.

The 9 and oversize 8 foot surfaces follow the WPA equipment specifications; the 7 and 8 foot sizes come from Brunswick's room size chart.
Don't trust rounded charts in a tight room. Brunswick's chart gives the 8 foot table 13 by 17 feet, 4 inches too narrow.
The cue length rule
A ball can stop against any cushion, so you need a cue length behind it on all four sides.
Room = playing surface + 2 x cue length, in each direction
Measure from the cushion, not the cabinet: the rails sit inside the cue allowance. The same logic sizes a conference room, where chairs set the room instead of cues.
Shorter cues
A shorter cue beats a smaller table: going from an 8 to a 7 foot table saves only 6 inches of width.

Will it fit your room?
A 12 by 16 foot room takes a 7 foot table with 52 inch cues. To check yours:
- Measure to the nearest obstruction, such as a sofa or door swing.
- Subtract the playing surface from the room width and length, in inches.
- Halve each result. The smaller one is your longest usable cue.
Even a 20 by 20 foot two-car garage clears a 9 foot table with full cues. Test other rooms against standard room sizes.
Ceiling and light height
The bed sits 29 1/4 to 31 inches up, and the WPA equipment specifications keep a movable light at least 40 inches above it.
84 in ceiling, less 31 in bed, less 40 in clearance = 13 in for the fixture
So a 7 foot basement ceiling works. Compare standard ceiling height.
