Average Bedroom Size
In a typical new US home, builders put the primary bedroom at 312 square feet out of 815 for all bedrooms, per the National Association of Home Builders' 2019 builder survey. That's the average bedroom size data there is: no federal survey measures single bedrooms. Enter your room's length and width to compare.
Average bedroom size in new homes
The primary bedroom takes 13.1 percent of the floor space in new homes under 2,000 square feet and 9.2 percent in homes of 3,500 or more, in NAHB's Spaces in New Homes (survey of builders, November 2018). The typical home in that survey was 2,913 square feet.
All the other bedrooms together take 503 square feet. NAHB didn't report how many rooms that covers, so there is no reliable per-room average. Whole-home figures are in average square footage of a house and average apartment size; other rooms are in standard room sizes.
Compare like with like: about half the builders surveyed counted closet space in their room figures, so measure your bedroom with its closet before comparing.
Minimum bedroom size by code
A bedroom needs 70 square feet and no side under 7 feet under section R312 of the 2024 International Residential Code (R304 in the 2021 edition), and it has to pass all four tests.

Shared rooms: the 2024 International Property Maintenance Code, where adopted, requires 50 square feet per occupant in a shared bedroom (404.4.1), so three children need 150. A bedroom can't be the only way into another bedroom (404.4.2).

The IRC doesn't require a closet, and since it defines closets as non-habitable, many inspectors won't count closet floor toward the 70. Do closets count as square footage covers the home total, and closet dimensions covers walk-in sizes.
Room for a queen bed
No code sets clearances around a bed, so a 60 by 80 inch queen fits even a 7 by 10 foot minimum room. For an easy layout, use the clearances the 2010 ADA Standards set for accessible hotel rooms: 30 inches clear on each side of the bed (806.2.3, 305.3) and a 36 inch route (403.5.1).
